What is metadata, and why does it matter?

Metadata is hidden information stored inside a file itself, invisible when you simply open it. A photo taken with your phone can carry the device model, the exact date and time it was taken, and even precise GPS coordinates. PDF and Word files keep the author's name, company, and creation date; MP3 files hold the artist and album; and videos store codec, duration, and resolution details.

Knowing this data matters for two reasons: privacy (an ordinary-looking photo can reveal your location without you realizing it) and authenticity (recent C2PA data reveals whether an image was generated by AI or altered).

Why everything happens in your browser

Unlike most online metadata tools that upload your file to a remote server, Online Metadata runs entirely inside your browser: your file is never sent to any server, no one but you ever sees it, and nothing remains after you close the page. That makes it the safer choice for sensitive files.

Supported formats

The tool supports images (full read/write for JPEG and PNG, read-only for WEBP), audio (full read/write for MP3, read-only for FLAC/WAV), video, plus PDF and Word (docx) files. Reading is available for every format; editing, removing, and copying are fully supported for JPEG, PNG, MP3, PDF, and Word.

How to use the tool

  1. Pick the tool you need from the home page (view, remove, edit, copy...).
  2. Drop your file in or click to select it — it stays in your browser only.
  3. See the result instantly, then download the edited or cleaned file.

Frequently asked questions

What is metadata?

Metadata is extra information stored inside a file that describes its content without being part of what you visually see — such as the creation date, the device or software that made it, or GPS coordinates for photos.

Does the site upload my files to an external server?

No, never. All reading, editing, and removal happens entirely inside your browser via JavaScript; your file is never sent to any server at any point.

Which file formats does the tool support?

Images (JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF...), audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC...), video (MP4, WebM, MOV...), plus PDF and Word (docx). Full editing and removal are supported for JPEG, PNG, MP3, PDF, and Word.

What is C2PA data and content provenance?

C2PA (Content Credentials) is a recent standard that attaches verified origin information to files — for example, whether an image was generated by an AI tool, along with the creation date and software. The tool detects this data automatically in the View tab.

Is the tool completely free?

Yes, all seven tools (view, remove, edit, copy, compare, extract PDF pages, extract video assets) are completely free, with no sign-up or installation required.

Does the tool support languages other than English?

Yes, the tool is available in Arabic, French, and English; you can switch languages at any time from the dropdown menu at the top of the page.

Note: all processing happens locally in your browser (nothing is uploaded to a server), but full remove/edit/copy support is available for JPEG and PNG images, MP3 files, PDF and Word (docx). Other formats (WEBP, FLAC/WAV, video) are well supported for viewing, but writing to them is limited or unsupported due to their format complexity.
New: the View tab now also detects C2PA / Content Credentials data — such as an indication that an image was "AI-generated", the name of the creation tool, and the signature date — for images, audio and video files carrying this signature. This feature alone needs to download a small verification library from a CDN (jsDelivr), once; your own file always stays inside your browser and is never sent anywhere.

View metadata

Upload any image, audio, video, PDF or DOCX file to view all the hidden data inside it.

Remove metadata

Strips all metadata from the file and gives you a clean copy to download.

Edit metadata

Reads the editable fields; change whatever you like, then save a new copy.

Copy metadata

Copies the metadata from the source file to the target file (both must be the same file type).

Compare metadata

Shows the differences between the metadata of two files.

Extract PDF pages as images

Converts each page of the PDF file into a separate, downloadable PNG image.

Extract video assets

Extract a frame (image) from any moment, or extract the full audio track.

Audio extraction works by actually playing the video while recording its audio track (it takes roughly the length of the video). Extracting embedded tracks (subtitles inside the container) is not supported in this lightweight in-browser version.
